Uses and Health Benefits of Shilajit

One of the most exciting uses of Shilajit that I have found is in treating altitude problems for the commoner or soldier ascending from lower altitudes to higher altitudes in the Indian Himalayan region. A number of problems arise from the low atmospheric pressure such as acute mountain sickness, insomnia, fatigue, pulmonary edema, loss of appetite, lethargy, chronic fatigue and body aches. Shilajit is taken to overcome such problems in these areas. Perhaps Mother Nature made it available in this region because she knew her earthlings would need this herb to overcome their harsh environments.

Upon further research, I found tremendous scientific information on the uses and benefits of Shilajit, some in proper controlled studies and some in ancestral traditional knowledge. People living in the Himalayan region who rely on conventional medicine will attest that it doesn’t need any real research because the main evidence is generations of North Indian families and Sherpas consuming it and living a good, happy and healthy life with minimal medical intervention.

The following is a list of diseases/conditions that Shilajit helps manage, cure, or in some cases even prevent:

Alzheimer’s Disease & Brain Function

The various compounds found in shilajit may help brain function and even aid in therapy for Alzheimer’s. A recent study in the International Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease mentions that mumijo is traditionally used by cognition boosters for longevity and slowing down aging. The compounds it contains may help control cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s. Researchers assume that shilajit could have an impact on the prevention of mental illness. However, more detailed outcome-oriented research is needed to explore these possibilities.

Gastrointestinal problems

It aids in the proper absorption & digestion of food and maintains a balanced state of the GI tract.

Weakness & Muscle Loss

Helps with energy production by migrating into the deep tissues of the body, healing fractures and reducing recovery time for injured muscles.

Stress

It is blessed with tremendous benefits to overcome physical and mental stress.

Infertility

Helps both infertile men and women to increase their vitality and sexual vitality. There are proven studies of increased sperm count in men consuming Shilajit daily after being diagnosed with low sperm count and motility.

Aging

The fulvic acid found in Shilajit acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that reduces cell damage and free radicals in the body. These two factors are the main contributors to aging.

Anemia

Anemia develops in your body when the blood doesn’t have enough hemoglobin or enough healthy cells, red blood cells. One of the many causes of anemia is iron deficiency. The symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are irregular heartbeat, weakness and fatigue, cold hands and feet, and headaches. Shilajit has high levels of humic acid and iron, which could help treat anemia. However, it would be best to explore this option with your Ayurvedic practitioner or your GP before taking the supplement.

Heart health

Shilajit can also protect your heart and improve your heart health. Recent studies on rats showed the protective effects that shilajit has on the heart. Animals treated with shilajit prior to heart injury had less damage to their hearts than those who did not consume shilajit. It is important to note that shilajit can lower blood pressure in some cases and should not be consumed by anyone who has active heart disease.

Obesity

Being overweight puts a strain on the body and quickly tires the muscles. A study published in a medical food journal observed that obese people who took an oral supplement of pure shilajit responded better to exercise than those who didn’t. Researchers found that shilajit-activated genes in your body help skeletal muscles quickly adapt to a new training regime. This can mean less fatigue and increased strength over time.
